About POMS AWAY!

When I was nine years old, my world fell apart.

There I was, living quite happily in a small town in the North of England, when my parents dropped a bombshell: we were moving to New Zealand.

New Zealand – wasn’t that the little triangle at the bottom of Australia? Wasn’t it millions of miles away, filled with bubbling lakes of lava and cannibals and sheep?

Well, I was right about the sheep.

It turned out that New Zealand was quite similar to England, but the differences were truly amazing. This blog is about what makes New Zealand different.

You might be especially interested if you were thinking about moving to New Zealand, or coming here for a holiday.

In my experience, the best way to see the country is by campervan. My family’s driven all around New Zealand and seen countless places of outstanding beauty within it. This blog is also about those places.

I hope you like it.

  5. Cool blog idea! I’m a Canadian living in Japan, never been to NZ, but it’s one of the top places I’ve always wanted to go. Recently I’ve been wondering if I can get there easier from here… hmm. Will have to browse around your site! 🙂

    Hi there,

I am a television producer working for major independent production company Optomen Television in London. We are currently producing a new documentary series for Channel 4 in the UK about people who have quit the rat race and moved to live in remote locations the world. It will be an inspirational series following the incredible stories of ordinary people who are living a unique way of life in some of the most beautiful and breath-taking places. The presenter, Kevin McCloud, best known for presenting the hit TV series ‘Grand Designs’ will visit people in their wildness homes and get to experience first-hand the wonder of life in these stunning locations.

Our research team in London is currently looking for suitable stories to feature in the series and we’re keen to contact people who may be interested in taking part.

I came across your website and I thought I would contact you so see if you know of any British/Irish ex-pat families living in remote wilderness locations in New Zealand that could be interested?

I am attaching a jpeg flyer, do feel free to forward on this information or post on your Webpage/Facebook/Twitter/.

Any help you can provide is much appreciated. Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Many Thanks and Kind Regards,

    Cheryl Jackson

      Hello there,

I know of one person, (a relative of a friend,) who lives in a remote, wilderness location in New Zealand… I think it was a four-day hike away from a supermarket, or something like that. However, I don’t know if they’re British or Irish; they might just be Kiwi. I’ll ask my friend and get back to you.

Awesome that you found my blog.

    Dear pomsawaydownunder,

My name is Joyce and I work for ExpatFinder.com.
ExpatFinder.com is a free one stop website for people preparing to move or working and living overseas. We provide a myriad of services for expatriates and we have over 2,000 articles to help and support the people moving around the world and we are now creating an interview section to help the expats with real life experiences!
We quite enjoy your blog about living in New Zealand, it is very interesting and informative. Would it be possible to interview you to further share some of your tips and feature some of your first hand experience as an Expat and your interview will be published on our Expat Interview section as a guide for our expat readers. The questions are mainly about the day to day lifestyle of an expat. If it would be possible, could you also send some photographs that we can use?
Of course, if you accept, we can add a link to your blog or some of your website.
The questions are enclosed, feel free to respond freely. You can return the doc with your answers if you accept this invitation.
Thanks in advance and do let me know if you prefer other means to conduct this interview and we would be happy to accommodate your terms.

    Best regards,
    Joyce
